Nikolay N.
Zavalishin
Born December 04, 1972
in Moscow, Russia. After graduating from the school in 1990 I entered
the Moscow Institute of electronics and mathematics (MIEM) and completed
its Faculty of Applied Mathematics in 1996 with the university diploma
in mathematical modelling. Although this specialty at the
Department of mathematical modelling was oriented to methods of
analytical and continuum mechanics, ecological problems and ecosystems
modeling issues became the most interest at the time of finishing
studies. This was the reason of my activities in mathematical ecology
started during the diploma preparation and continued since 1996 when I
became a post-graduate student at the Laboratory of mathematical ecology
in the A.M. Obukhov Institute of atmospheric physics of Russian Academy
of Sciences under supervising of Prof. D.O. Logofet. All the
professional background in ecosystem theory, ecological modeling and
mathematical methods of nonlinear dynamics was received in this
Laboratory. In 1999-2000 I participated in the project on the
design and development of global vegetation models and their reaction to
Climate Change at the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research
(project leader Prof. Y.M. Svirezhev). Mathematical models of matter and
energy cycles in local bog ecosystems of flow-reservoir type under
climatic and human perturbations were the subject of my PhD thesis
prepared in 1999-2002 and defended at the Dorodnitsyn Computer Centre of
Russian Academy of Sciences in 2002. Simultaneously in 1995 – 2003 I
worked as a software developer at the Locomotive Engine Design Bureau of
Russian Ministry of Railways raising my background in computer
programming and software development since a realization of any
mathematical model often depends on programming skills of its authors.
But the most valuable for me are many wonderful co-workers and friends
there. (site PKBCT) Since 2003 I am a
researcher at the Laboratory of mathematical ecology at the A.M. Obukhov
Institute of atmospheric physics RAS. My main research areas are general
ecology problems, ecosystem models, nonlinear population dynamics,
global and local biogeochemical cycles, vegetation dynamics under the
Climate Change and anthropogenic perturbations, regular and chaotic
oscillations in ecological and physical models.
