ESTIMATING THE INTENSITY OF METHANE FLUX INTO THE ATMOSPHERE FROM ECOSYSTEMS OF THE NORTHERN REGION IN WESTERN SIBERIA

Project 14-05-00193 of the Russian Fund of Basic Research
leader Dr. Leonid L. Golubyatnikov

Project dates        2014–2016

Information

The project focuses on assessing the contribution of ecosystems of the northern region in Western Siberia to global methane emissions. Existing estimates of annual greenhouse gas emissions from the territory under study base on the little data volume from field measurements. In the project, experimental data on emissions of methane from lakes and wetlands of the northern region in Western Siberia will be obtained. The field data will give a representative estimation of the contribution of Western Siberia northern ecosystems to the atmospheric methane budget. Based on the modelling approach, responses of methane fluxes into the atmosphere from natural ecosystems of the northern region in Western Siberia in the XXI century under climate change will be evaluated.

The aim of our research:
- estimation of methane emission from wetland ecosystems of the northern region in Western Siberia based on the experimental measurements;
- estimation of methane fluxes from lakes to the atmosphere based on the experimental measurements for the territory under study;
- comparison methane fluxes from different ecosystems of the northern region in Western Siberia and assessment of their contribution to regional emissions of methane;
- estimation of the contribution of regional ecosystems to the atmospheric methane budget;
- analysis of the relationship between methane flux from wetlands and the vegetation productivity for ecosystems of the northern region in Western Siberia;
- estimation of change for methane fluxes from the ecosystems of the region in the XXI century under climate change.
