CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ON DYNAMICS OF CARBON AND NITROGEN FLUXES IN PERMAFROST REGION FOR THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

Project 12-05-01092 of the Russian Fund of Basic Research
leader Dr. Maxim M. Arzhanov

Project dates        2012–2014

Information

2012:
The database on the spatial distribution of organic carbon and nitrogen in the permafrost area of the Northern Hemisphere is formed. Verification of the developed dynamic models of biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial ecosystems and heat-moisture transfer in soil was carried out. Carbon and nitrogen cycle models adequately reproduce exchange of these elements in terrestrial ecosystems, and able to demonstrate changes in the intensities of flows and stocks of carbon and nitrogen in ecosystems under changing climate. The model of heat-moisture transfer based on the Stefan problem is used to calculate the thermal and hydrological soil regime. Using the model of heat-moisture transfer, changes in thermal and hydrological soil characteristics and active layer dynamics in 21st century forced by the anthropogenic scenarios RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 are simulated. Based on the spatial distribution of soil carbon, nitrogen and modeling results of the dynamics of the active layer the changes of the carbon and nitrogen pools due to the permafrost degradation in 21st century were obtained.
