MODELING AND DIAGNOSIS OF THE INTERACTION OF CLIMATIC CHANGE AND NITROGEN CYCLE

Project 10-05-00265 of the Russian Fund of Basic Research
leader Dr. Leonid L. Golubyatnikov

Project dates        2010–2012

Information

Spatially non-uniform dynamic model of the global nitrogen cycle has been designed and calibrated using specially prepared database on pools and flows of nitrogen in terrestrial ecosystems and ecosystems of the world ocean. The model includes nitrogen reservoirs in vegetation, litter, soil organic and inorganic compounds, surface and deep ocean as well as flows between them. Atmospheric nitrogen is considered as a universal exchange pool connecting local fluxes of the nitrogen turnover in ocean and land. The model accounts for a continental run-off of compounds of soil nitrogen from surface to the ocean. In the model two anthropogenic fluxes are taken into account: fertilizers entering into soils, and nitrogen coming into the atmosphere with anthropogenic emissions. The dynamic model designed adequately reproduces the terrestrial and oceanic nitrogen cycles and is shown to demonstrate changes of nitrogen storages and flow intensities in aquatic ecosystems under changes of climatic parameters and anthropogenic impact. Based on the developed model of the nitrogen cycle the numerical simulations of nitrogen mass-balance exchange in the “atmosphere-terrestrial ecosystems-ocean” system under predicted climate changes have been carried out.
