Information
In the project, the Complex Model of Bog Landscapes (COMBOLA) has been designed and tested allowing one to make, calibrate, and integrate combined models of biological turnover and processes of heat and mass transfer in a peat deposit on annual, season and daily time scales. Series of regular measurements of carbon dioxide and methane fluxes, water table levels,
run-off and temperature profiles at five main bog landscapes in middle and southern taiga of Western Siberia as well as reference data on the biotic turnover components for peatlands in the European territory of Russia are used for the model design. The techniques for dividing observed CO2 fluxes into components of gross primary productivity and respiration has
also been created for modeling carbon cycle at small time scales and tested at hummock-hollow complexes. This techniques allows calibrating the Net Ecosystem Exchange model with measured carbon dioxide emission fluxes temperature dependencies. Calculating water balance components for bogs is accompanied by the “delayed drainage” model for estimating the peat
deposition intensity depending on water balance. In order to correctly transform the local modeling results on the spatial level, new method of the peatland landscape mosaic pattern is developed and applied to the main landscape types of middle and southern taiga zone in Weastern Siberia. Numerical experiments have been carried out with both separate carbon
and carbon-nitrogen turnover models and combined models of biotic turnover and processes in peat deposit.
